Search Engine Optimisation [SEO]
Unlike traditional shops that can be found by walking down a high street, a Website is slightly different because it has no tangible physical presence.
The Importance of SEO
You have a wonderful looking Website that has been designed to be ‘search engine friendly’ and therefore accessible to all those that may be interested in its content. But how will your potential customers, clients and fellow enthusiasts find it?
The answer is Search Engine Optimization, commonly known as SEO. 85% of all Website traffic is driven by search engines so it is vitally important that if your business relies heavily on search engine traffic, you must ensure that your Website is optimised for search engines.
How to make a Website search engine optimised
SEO entails the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a Website from search engines using a carefully planned and structured Internet marketing strategy. The key to creating an effective strategy is to first establish how search engines work and how people will search for your goods, services or information.
When a Website is search engine optimised, its Web pages will rank high in a search engine’s list of search results.
Different types of SEO
If you asked different people involved in Website design the question "What are the different types of SEO?", you would probably get a varied range of answers. In my opinion, there are essentially two types of SEO options available. These two types are known as On-page Optimisation and 0ff-page Optimisation.
On-page Optimisation
The process of On-page Optimisation basically involves building a well-designed Website and populating it with well-written targeted content. On-Page Optimisation entails:
- A user-friendly Website design
- Keyword analysis
- Keyword-rich content
- Keyword-rich page title, META tags and image ALT tags
- Correctly structured HTML
- Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)
Off-page Optimisation
Off-page optimisation entails obtaining quality links back to your Website from other Websites with a similar theme. By increasing the number of quality links back to your Website, you are also increasing your it’s link popularity and reputation. Off-Page Optimisation entails:
- Link exchange
- Search Engine submission
- Directory submission
- Social Networking
- Article submission
- PPC Ad Campaign
